The invention relates to a method for monitoring and avoiding levels of gas which threaten the environment when liquids are decanted in conjunction with an at least partial recirculation of the gases into the supply tank. In order to provide appropriate monitoring of such gas levels, the effect of the physically different conditions above the liquid (2) in the supply tank (2) on the original gas volume above the liquid (1) are recorded and the decanting process is carried out in two operating processes, - the actual decanting process with simultaneous gas recirculation and - equalisation of the atmosphere changing in tanks (1) and (2) and the ambient atmosphere.
