The garden or hand-held umbrella has support spokes (10) connected to a power-accumulator so that when the umbrella is being opened and closed it goes through a dead centre. The dead centre position is between 50 and 80 or between 20 and 50% of the opening movement. The power accumulator is positioned between the canopy-supporting spokes and the longer spokes (9) and has a tension spring (13). The spokes (9, 10) are connected to a deflector roller for an elastic cable, pulley or such like. USE/ADVANTAGE - The garden or hand-held umbrella is opened and closed partly automatically without a motor by having a power accumulator.
