The computer which is accessible via the public switched telephone network is equipped with a speech recogniser and a central data store. To improve communication each speech input/output terminal is associated spatially with a display device linked to the computer for visual display of the information delivered by the latter. The display device may be of liq. crystal type with its own data memory. It may be linked by radio or infrared wireless communication to the speech input/output terminal. ADVANTAGE - Simply constructed system providing additional channel via display for more efficient dialogue between caller and central computer.
