The automatic transmission is controlled by a programmed unit (1) with different ranges of characteristics selected by the gearshift lever (4). The additional programs are selected by moving the shift through the normal drive setting to one of a series of settings. The additional settings include fuel saving driving modes, sporty type drive modes of various degree of performance etc.. The programmer (1) is inserted between the gearshift and the transmission (3) and can be selected for different types of vehicle/performance. ADVANTAGE - No special additions required to transmission, simple programable control. Allows immediate arbitrary change of selected driving mode to suit short unplanned changes in driving style.
