The wire is fed forward by a driven drawing disc, transport roller or straightening roller etc., and is parted off into bars, sections etc. The parting cutters (5, 7) are positively coupled to the feed mechanism (1), so that their peripheral speed corresponds to that at which the wire (6) is fed forward. The moment of inertia of the feed mechanism can be utilised to provide the necessary power at the time the cut is made. The parting mechanism can consist of two rotary cutter heads. Where the feed is by a straightening rotor, this can have a clutch and brake mechanism transmitting its moment of inertia when the cut is made.
