The vehicle transmission has a special clutch (3) behind a freewheel unit (5) to engage an air compressor (4) when retardation is required. The freewheel unit separates the engine from the drive and allows the engine to run with idling speed. The freewheel unit and clutch are in line coaxial to the main transmission shaft. A low friction thrust bearing (2) engages the air compressor clutch. A thrust lever driven by a linear motor (1) drives the clutch action. The linear motor is electrically controlled.
