Brake unit for railway vehicle wheel - has multi-disc brake, suspended in fluid-filled pivoted housing, and with connected friction wheel

The brake is for a wheel (3), carried on an axletree (2), with the axis X-X', which is suspended from a bogie (1) of a railway waggon. A disc (4) is non-turnably connected to the wheel. A brake unit with friction wheel (5) is similarly fastened to a shaft (6) with the axis, and there is a multi-disc brake with a tension device. The brake is submerged into a fluid in a sealed housing (10). This is suspended from the bogie so as to pivot about an axis X2-X'2. A coupling device (12) for the brake unit pivots the housing, so that the friction wheel engages tangentially on the turnable disc, and wheel and shaft are rotated. A control device actuates the tension device only, when the tangential contact has been made. USE/ADVANTAGE - Brake unit esp. for high-speed trains, maintains critical functions within limits for safe operation.
