A motor-vehicle gear-shift arrangement for a change-speed gear having five forward and one reverse ratio has a transverse selector shaft 4 freely carrying three selector levers 6, 7, 8 the first 6 of which is connected direct to a shift hub 3 and the last two 7 and 8 are connected by push-rods 12, 13 respectively to forks 9, 10 which rock about fixed axes 14 to operate clutch shift hubs 1 and 2. Selection is by axially sliding the selector shaft 4, by means of a lever (not shown), to engage a clutch pin 5 carried thereby in one or other of slotted recesses 6a, 7a, 8a, in the selector levers 6, 7, 8, rotation of the shaft 4 then turning the desired lever for ratio establishment, the selector levers 6, 7, 8 establishing first and reverse; second and third; and fourth and fifth ratios respectively. An interlock which inhibits movement of any one selector lever 6, 7, 8 to a ratio established position while the adjacent lever is in a corresponding ratio established position comprises spring- loaded pin detents 20, 21, 22 which engage and seat between cams 6b, 6c &c. formed on selector levers 6, 7, 8, thus held normally in a central, e.g. neutral position, the pins 20-22 extending into a pocket 24 housing drift balls 25 such that gear establishing movement of any one lever thrusts its detent pin to move the balls 25 to block gear establishing movement of the adja- cent levers. Fig. 6 (not shown) illustrates a similar arrangement whereby drift pins transversely arranged to the detent pins are moved to engage and lock in grooves in adjacent detents when any one detent is moved during a gear-change. In Fig. 5 (not shown), the pushrods are formed with spherical angle joints and have screw-threaded portions for adjusting the effective length. |
