The test appts. comprises a fixed carrier (1) adjacent the device under test (DUT) (4) and a mobile carrier (5) which can be displaced laterally to a rest position making contact with the surface of the DUT (4) without applying force. In the working position the mobile carrier (5) is driven by a mechanism to exert a force on the DUT. Transducers (7,8) measure the applied force and the displacement of the DUT.
