PURPOSE:To enable a discriminating process with high precision by quantitatively extracting only sensor data on the feature part of paper money to be decided regardless of the shifting of the printed pattern of the paper money, etc., and the deviation in the travel line of a read sensor. CONSTITUTION:A part where specific conditions are satisfied in the output signal of the read sensor 4 is extracted as a decision point. For example, the part where ¦XiA-Xialpha¦>(sigmaiA+sigmaialpha)...(1) is satisfied is extracted as the decision point. Where, XiA is the pattern read mean value of (i) points of the paper money A, Xialpha the pattern read mean values of (i) points of the paper money alpha, sigmaiA the standard deviation of XiA, and sigmaialpha the standard deviation of Xialpha. Consequently, the feature part of the paper money 15, etc., can quantitatively and easily be extracted, and highly precise decision making is enabled. Further, only the feature part is regarded as an object of comparison and then necessary and sufficient data for the decision making may be only stored in a ROM 11, whose capacity is therefore saved. |
