The receiver (11) is kept cold by ice, or a eutectic mixture (22), within a thermally insulated case (12). The abstraction head (18), connected to the receiver by a flexible pipe (17) and self-sealing valve (15), contains a non-return valve leading to a hollow spike (19), projecting from one jaw of a pair of pincers, the opposing jaw having a semi-cylindrical profile (20). On applying the pincers to a refrigerator fluid-bearing tube, the spike penetrates and, due to the lower temperature and pressure in the receiver, conveys away the contents of the refrigerating system. The necessary receiver conditions may be produced by an adsorption-type cooler, regenerated after use by heating it. ADVANTAGE - Safely removes environmentally hostile refrigerants from refrigerators and freezers, in situ, without mains power, before scrapping.
