In a TE laser, which contains CO2 and N2 in a wt. ratio of less than 1:10 and which has an anode (21) and a cathode (22) in a cavity (8) delimited at one end by an optical coupling surface (12) having greater than 90% reflectivity towards the laser cavity, the novelty is that the anode (21) is of silicon carbide. USE/ADVANTAGE - The laser is useful for marking materials or for carrying out microsurgical operations, e.g. hollowing of bone or tooth surfaces. The silicon carbide anode has high resistivity at low current, so that uniformly distributed current lines are established at the start of an electric pulse, but has reduced resistivity at high current, so that significant electrical losses are avoided while the electric field equilibrium is maintained over most of the pulse duration. Thus, longer pulse durations can be employed without electrode deterioration.
