A glass batch is prepared by forming an homogeneous mixture of batch ingredient particles; mixing this with an aqueous solution of alkali metal hydroxide(s); and contacting with one or more gaseous acidic oxides. Alkali metal salt(s) are thus formed in situ. The alkali may be, e.g. NaOH or KOH. The acid gas may be, e.g. CO2, SO2, and/or SO3, and may be in the form of combustion gases. Before the contact with the acid gas, the mixture may be pressed into shaped bodies. |
