Magnesium monoperoxyphthalate of formula (I) is used, in a cosmetically acceptable aq. medium, for bleaching or lightening natural or tinted keratinic fibres, esp. natural or tinted hair. USE/ADVANTAGE - Compsns. contg. (I) have a powerful bleaching and lightening action on hair, including hair tinted with indolic dyes and precursors and are used at a pH of less than or equal to 6.5, esp. at pH 3.5-4.5, which is advantageous in comparison to previously used bleach compsns. based on H2O2 used at highly alkaline pH, since the compsns. based on (I) cause less irritation to the skin, scalp and mucous membranes and give rise to less degradation of the keratin than the H2O2 based compsns.
