The sensor system is located at the rear of one of the vehicle wheels and uses a sensor plate (7) detecting the water flung up from the road surface. The sensor plate has a base plate (9) with an acceleration sensor (10) mounted at its rear providing a signal in response to the impact of the surface water, which is amplified and filtered before being fed to a comparator for comparison with a reference signal. When the sensor signal is above the reference signal value, an analogue signal representing the surface water level is supplied to a display instrument. ADVANTAGE - Good reliability, unaffected by road salt.
