This invention is directed to a method and apparatus for electrically destroying a syringe needle. The apparatus includes a housing (12) having a burn chamber (14) with a first electrical contact (33) with a conical shaped port (40) mounted on a front face wall (32) of the burn chamber (14) and a second electrical contact (53) made of a block secured to the burn chamber (14) is used to destroy a hypodermic needle (50). The conical shaped port (40) and an opening (37) are sized to receive the metal needle portion (42), the neck portion (44), shoulder portion (46) and body portion (48) of the hypodermic needle (50). A battery (78) is used to energize the contacts (33, 53). When the hypodermic needle (50) is in the opening (37) the length of the needle (50) is in contact with the second contact (53) melting of at least most of the needle's length, with the resulting melted waste falling into a tray (70). |
