<p>A tool for opening a container comprises a cylindrical housing (2) with a radially extending inwardly directed annular flange (4). Extending from around the inner circumferential surfaces of the annular flange and directed axially downwardly is an array (6) of eight teeth (8). The radially inner side of each tooth (8) has a radially outwardly directed step (8A). The steps (8A) of all eight teeth define an interrupted land which will support a severed membrane. In operation the cylindrical member (2) is lowered onto the screw threaded neck of a container. The neck is closed by a rupturable membrane. When the teeth (8) engage the membrane they will pierce the membrane at eight separate locations until the flange (4) rests on the neck. In this position the step (8A) in each tooth (8) will underlie the membrane. The cylindrical housing (2) is then rotated to produce a complete circular cut out of the membrane. The circular cut-out upon being disconnected from the rest of the membrane will now rest on the interrupted land formed by the teeth. The cylindrical housing (2) can now be withdrawn and will take with it the circular cut-out.</p> |
