The fluorescent tube (11) is centred in a coaxial arrangement of transparent inner and outer tubular screens (23,24) which define an annular cylindrical space (28). The screens are mfd. of, e.g. acrylic glass, and bonded together at a floor (26) with an airtight and liq.-tight seal. The space between the screens may be filled with a translucent and/or diffusive liq. or granular material for variation of the character of the light emitted from the outer envelope (17) towards a parabolic reflector (18). ADVANTAGE - Structure which surrounds fluorescent tube and is comparable with lamp screen can be realised in variety of ways.
