Lights (12) are so positioned and alternately switched that visual stimuli is observed by a stationarily-positioned patient at right and left extremes of the patient's range of lateral eye movement. Headphones (28) are provided on the patient's ears and alternately switched between the patient's ears so that the auditory stimuli is alternately presented to the patient's ears synchronously with alternately switching of the visual stimuli. The physiological responses of the patient to the visual and auditory stimuli is monitored, and, in response thereto, the switching of the visual and auditory stimuli is controlled using a computer (46) so as to elicit a mental imagery of a negative experience of the patient and to eliminate undesirable emotional arousal evoked by the negative experience and substitute a positive experience reinforcing a desired behavior.
