Process for producing N- beta -hydroxyalkyl-tri-N-carboxyalkyl-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane and N- beta -hydroxyalkyl-tri-N-carboxyalkyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane derivatives and their metal complexes of general formula (I) in which R<1> is a -(CH2)1-6-COOY group, possibly substituted by R<3>, R<2> is a group (a) and n represents the figures 2 or 3, where the possibly existing hydroxy residues or carboxy groups may be present in protected form, by the reaction of 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane or 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane, possibly in the form of their salts, in the presence of a base, with an epoxide of formula (II), in a polar solvent or without a solvent at temperatures of 0 to 220 DEG C within 0.5 to 48 hours, and possibly in the presence of a base with a compound of formula (III).
