The machine has an oscillating driven needle, typically curved, working with a loop-arrester, typically an oscillating forked grip. The tissue edges are supported adjacent to the area where the needle passes through them. Supporting is by means of forceps (32) with two arms (33,34), opening and shutting in synchronism with movement of the needle (1). Each time before needle insertion these shut to hold the edges (A,B) together. After the needle has emerged, they open to free the edges. The arms can be spring-loaded into the shut position and opened by a control cam (41). A spring common to both and also adjustable can be used. USE/ADVANTAGE - Improved support for tissue edges, and improved indexing of them during stitching.
