A chromone derivative represented by general formula (1), an intermediate for the synthesis thereof, and an aldose reductase inhibitor containing the same as the active ingredient, wherein R1 and R2 may be the same or different from each other and each represents hydrogen or lower alkyl. The derivative is readily capable of total synthesis and has such an excellent aldose reductase inhibitory effect that it is useful as an aldose reductase inhibitor.
