Stirrer and plunger units for use with molten glass consist of a core, in the form of bars and/or strips or otehr cross-sections, of Mo or W or alloys of these, in diffusion barriers of ceramic bodies of square or other cross-sections contg. Al2O3 and/or sillimanite blocks and/or blocks contg. MgO. A flame-sprayed coating of Al2O3, ZrO2, TiO2, and/or other compatible materials can protect the core material as diffusion barrier. The assembly is coated with Pt or Pt alloy. ADVANTAGE - Mechanical strength, relatively low cost.
