A process is disclosed for producing and feeding wash water in a washing installation, in particular a car washing installation (1), according to which the wash water is used in at least one washing process for cleaning a motor vehicle (28) or the like and is evacuated after each washing process. In order to use only relatively reduced amounts of wash water, the evacuated wash water is reused in an essentially closed water circuit for successive washing processes. The evacuated wash water is collected and supplied to a filtering installation or similar processing device and at least part of the filtrate generated in the processing device or pure water thus produced is supplied to at least one ulterior washing process as wash water. Also disclosed is a washing installation, in particular a car washing installation (1), with at least one spray head or similar wash water outlet (2, 3, 4, 5) which applies the wash water to a motor vehicle (28) or similar object to be cleaned. The disclosed washing installation is characterized in that it has an arrangement for collecting the wash water after each washing process, the collecting arrangement (6) is linked with at least one device for processing at least part of the collected water and the filtrate or pure water outlet (10) of the processing device is linked with at least one wash water outlet of the washing installation. The required wash water can thus be used in the disclosed washing installation in a practically closed water circuit.
