A system and method for hydrostatic determination of body density. In one embodiment of the invention, the system includes a plurality of buyoant disks (18a-18d), each having a predetermined size and density, which can be associated with a person's body when submerged in water (24). The disks (18a-18d) can be assembled on a rod (14) by inserting the rod (14) through a centrally located hole in each disk (18). The rod (14) permits assembly of the disks (18a-18d) when submerged in water (24). Once submerged in water (24), the person must exhale as much air as possible from his lungs. In order to determine body density, disks (18a-18d) must be added or removed from the unit until the person achieves a state of suspension in the water (24), neither sinking nor surfacing when grasping the disks under water (24). By referencing the predetermined force of all disks used by a person to achieve a hydrostatic state when submerged in water (24), a well-known calculation can then be applied to determine the person's underwater weight or body density. |
