The invention relates to a machine (1) for cutting especially articles of food (4) into portions. In order to monitor the shape of the items (4) thus permitting a processing unit (17) to calculate the cross-sectional area of the items and consequently their weight with a view to cutting portions of a predetermined weight, the machine has a laser (14) arranged above a first belt (5) conveying the items (4) to a rotary circular cutting blade (18). The laser (14) transmits monitored data to the processing unit (17), which stops the belt (5) when a portion of the desired weight has just passed the circular cutting blade (18), following which the cutting is performed. The machine (1) has a supporting member (32, 38) for supporting the items (4) during the cutting, which supporting member (32, 38) is arranged in a space between the first belt (5) and a subsequent second belt (6) which is moved at a higher speed than is the first belt (5). A holding device is also provided for securing the items (4) during the actual cutting. |
