An ABS system, especially for motorbikes, has a hydraulic engine-driven pump to generate brake fluid pressure, several valves and a high/flow pressure reservoir with pistons at either end. The reservoir is connected to the wheel cylinder and in parallel with the pump. The pistons of the two reservoir chambers can move with respect to each other, the movement being detected by an inductive displacement sensor. The output from this sensor then determines the setting of the three valves, one connecting the wheel cylinder to the master cylinder and two in the reservoir-pump circuit. The first of these valves is closed during the ABS regime. A second example uses a fourth valve for the pressure build-up process. ADVANTAGE - Smooth regulation of braking.
