The ashtray has a sensor (1), e.g. temp. sensor, which detects the approach or contact of a lit cigarette. On detecting the cigarette, the sensor actuates a device (2) to knock the ash off the cigarette. It may also, or optionally, operate a device to move the ash receptacle (5) from a closed to an open position. The ashtray is preferably in the form of a creature e.g. a kangaroo or a crocodile or some other known object. Part of the creature or object, e.g. the kangaroo's paw (2) knocks the ash off. In a preferred embodiment, the kangaroo's pouch (5) or the crocodiles mouth opens to receive the falling ash. USE/ADVANTAGE - For building into car dashboard, etc. Has many applications and can be made into many different designs with high aesthetic and novelty appeal.
