[Also in Division G2] Polymers contain alkylene (N-alkyl) aminoalkylene groups linked through hydroxy-substituted oxyalkylene groups which may be etherified or esterified, and may be prepared by reacting an N-alkyldialkanolamine with a polyepoxide or by reacting an N-alkyl-containing polyepoxide with a diol. The N-alkyl groups may be substituted, especially by hydroxyl groups. Reactants used in the examples are methyldiethanolamine, ethyldiethanolamine, n-propyldiethanolamine, triethanolamine, triisopropanolamine, α - methylbenzyldiethanolamine, isopropyldiethanolamine, tetrakishydroxyethyldiaminoethane, methyldipropanolamine, N,N<SP>1</SP> - dihydroxyethylpiperazine, and ethylene glycol as polyols and as polyepoxides the diglycidyl ethers of ethylene glycol, 1,4- butylene glycol and glycerol and diglycidylisopropylamine. Examples are also given of the modification of the hydroxyl groups of the polymers by reaction with maleic anhydride, methylsulphochloride, ethyl isocyanate, acrylonitrile, acetic anhydride, o-sulphobenzoic anhydride and phthalic anhydride. The polymers and their salts are used to increase the developability and sensitivity of photographic emulsions and the modified polymers as development accelerating agents. |
