In a rack and pinion assembly for a vehicle steering gear, wherein a rack bar 4 is longitudinally movable through a pinion housing 2 and a tubular rack bar housing 8 which extends from the pinion housing, a plastics bearing member 11 secured in the outer end of the rack bar housing 8 supports the rack bar 4, a spring- urged plunger 15 urging convergent sides 4a of the rack bar into sliding engagement with similarly convergent faces 12a of the bearing member 11. Clearances 13 between the top and bottom of the rack bar and the aperture 12 of the bearing member 11 allow for fluid flow across the bearing as bellows 9, 10 change in volume due to movement of the rack bar. |
