PURPOSE:To display many various background images by changing mode data. CONSTITUTION:Dot data, character specification data, and the mode data are programmed in a ROM 38. A microprocessor 12 writes the character specification data constituting respective background screens of respective scenes that the mode data specify and the dot data on respective characters used for the respective background screens in an SC-RAM 42 and a CHR-RAM 44 from the ROM 38. An SC address circuit 16 reads the character specification data out of the SC-RAM 42 and an HR address circuit 18 reads the dot data of the respective characters out of the CHR-RAM 44 according to the specification data and mode data. The dot data are converted by a parallel-serial converting circuit 28 into serial data, which are merged by a dot data merging circuit 30 and supplied to a color generating circuit 34.
