PURPOSE: To obtain a dyeing assistant which comprises a specific cationic surfactant acting as a reserving agent in the dyeing of substrates dyeable with anionic dyes and a cationic surfactant acting as a retardant in the dyeing of polyacrylonitrile with cationic dyes. CONSTITUTION: This dyeing assistant composition comprises a cationic surfactant which per se acts as a reserving agent in the dyeing of substrates dyeable with anionic dyes such as an anionic dye of formula I [R is a group of formula II, formula III (R1 is a 10-22C fatty acid residue; R2 CO is the acyl group of a 10-22C fatty acid); X is formula IV (A is phenyleneethylene or the like; B is ethylene or the like); Alkylene is ethylene or the like; Y is a 1-4C alkyl or the like; W is H or the like; (n) is 0-4; (p) is 0 or 1; (q) is 1, 3; (r) is 1-30; eight to seventy B-O groups are contained; 50% of the B-O groups are ethyleneoxy units; three A-O groups are contained], or a mixture of such the surfactants, and a cationic surfactant which per se acts as a retarder in the dyeing of polyacrylonitrile with cationic dyes, such as the quaternary salt of a monoamine of formula V [R3 is a 10-22C fatty acid residue; R4 is an aryl (1-3C alkyl) or the like; (t) is 2-6; (w) is 0-6] or a mixture of such surfactants.
