PURPOSE:To obtain an excellent image which is reduced in a gap between dots and degradation in picture quality due to the shadow of a nonlinear element, a pixel electrode, etc., of an active matrix type liquid crystal display unit and small in image defocusing, and has no moire. CONSTITUTION:In the (color) image display device equipped with an image display unit having dot-shaped display segments arrayed in two dimensions one or more birefringent plate 6 is disposed in the display optical path of the image display unit 4 such as the active matrix liquid crystal display unit. The interruption frequency of the birefringent plate 6 is preferably higher the Nyquist frequency determined by the pixel size of the image display unit or lower than a sampling frequency or higher than the Nyquist frequency determined by the period of one group of color filters on the surface of the color image display unit and lower than the sampling frequency determined by the pixel size of the color image display unit. |
