A cpd. (I) having modulatory activity on the POMC-dependent metabolic pathway (POMC = pro-opio-melano-cortin) is used to prepare a medicament for treatment and prevention of retroviral infections. Pref. (I) is a benzofuran or benzopyran deriv. which modulates the immunomodulatory and antiinflammatory activity of alpha-MSH and acts as a photosensitiser or pigmentation agent, esp. and alkylated, hydroxylated or alkoxylated psoralen or isopsoralen deriv. esp. 5-methoxypsoralen (Ia). The medicament is formulated for oral admin. and also contains cytoprotective agents, esp. vitamin A and beta-carotene. The medicament may also contain an antiviral agent. USE/ADVANTAGE - The medicament may be used to treat AIDS patients, HIV-positive subjects, and subjects who are HIV-negative but at risk. The treatment may stabilise or increase T4 cell counts and/or normalise cortisol/beta-endorphin and ACTH/beta-endorphin ratios (see also FR 9007503).
