PURPOSE:To efficiently prevent the generation of smoke and soot in burning mainly a petroleum fuel by using a metallic soap containing Ca or Ce as the effective constituent. CONSTITUTION:A combustion improver obtained by using a metallic soap containing Ca or Ce as the effective constituent. Soot is deposited on a thin aluminum plate by using, e.g. a candle, and various metallic soaps are attached onto the soot. The plate is heated from the underside with a lighter, and the temperatures at which the soot disappears are measured. According to the results of the measurements, the soot burning temperatures with metallic soaps of Ca and Ce are each about 400 deg.C while all of those with metallic soaps of Na, K, Mg, Cu, Mn, Fe, Ni and Co are above 550 deg.C. Therefore, the addition of a combustion improver containing a metallic soap of Ca or Ce to a petroleum fuel can remarkably reduce the generation of smoke and soot, with a reduction in particulate substances by about 30-40%.
