Prepn. of light-coloured surfactants with reduced peroxide content comprises treating the anionic, non-ionic and/or amphoteric or zwitterionic surfactant with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of transition metal cpds. The surfactant paste pref. has a solids content of 5-85 wt.% and is pref. one of alkylbenzenesulphonate, alkanesulphonate, paraffinsulphonate, olefinsulphonate, alkylethersulphonate, glycerinethrsulphonate, alpha-methylester sulphonate, sulpho fatty acid, alkylsulphate, fatty alcohol ethersulphate, sulphosuccina(ma)te, sulphotriglyceride, isethionate (sic), tauride, sarcosinate, ether carboxylic acid or alkyl(ether) phosphate anionic surfactant, or one of alkyloligoglycoside, saccharose ester, sorbitane ester or polysorbate non-ionic surfactant or one of alkylamidobetaine, aminopropionate, imidazoliniumbetaine or sulphobetain amphoteric or zwitterionic surfactant. The transition metal cpds. are pref. a Pt, Pd, Cu, Fe and/or Mn cpds. Pref. 1-2000 ppm. (w.r.t. paste solids content) transition metal cpd. are added and the paste is treated with 0.1-5 wt.% (w.r.t. paste solids content) hydrogen peroxide. USE/ADVANTAGE - The surfactants are suitable for the prepn. of washing, rinsing and cleaning agents and hair and body care prods. Colour quality of the surfactant is improved by a cheap process without leaving reactive amts. of e.g. peroxide or borohydride cpds. in the compsn.
