[Also in Division C3] A paper or cloth is coated with a pressuresensitive adhesive produced by reacting a polymer or copolymer of vinyl chloride with a larger amount by weight of a polyester formed from a polybasic organic acid free from non- benzenoid unsaturation and a polyhydric alcohol, the polyester being free of product of molecular weight below 1,000; the reaction is effected by mixing the polymer and polyester at 140-220‹C for 6-30 minutes, preferably in the presence of an ester interchange catalyst which is also a PVC stabiliser, particularly lead and tin compounds. The polyester, subjected to molecular distillation to remove lowboiling material and preferably has a molecular weight of 1,000-4,000 per carboxyl group, and are preferably modified by reaction with an epoxy compound. In the examples the polyesters are prepared from (1) azelaine acid and butylene glycol and modified by reaction with 3,4-epoxy-6-methyl-cyclohexylmethyl-3, 4-epoxy-6-methylcyclohexane carboxylate, (2) as (1) but modified with 1-epoxyethyl-3, 4- expoxycyclohexane, (3) adipic acid, 1,3-butylene glycol and acetic anhydride modified as in (2), (4) as in (3) but modified with epoxidised soy bean fatty acids, (5) sebacic acid, 1,2-propylene glycol and acetic anhydride and modified with a bisphenol A-epichlorhydrin compound. These are reacted with vinyl chloride/ monoethyl maleate/diethyl maleate terpolymer, vinyl chloride/mono-n-butyl maleate copolymer or vinyl chloride/acrylic acid copolymer using an organo-tin stabiliser. The product is extruded through a slit onto a continuously moving paper or cloth web. |
