Reinforced light-weight component is made of foam such as a rigid polymer foam, polystyrene or silicate. The reinforcment consists of a number of strips bonded on faces at right angles to the longitudinal axis; they are incorporated in the foam particularly close to the surface of the product in which the product is subjected to tension forces. The strips concerned are steel, plastics or fibrous materials. Corner of a flat sheet, with a light-weight sheet (4) is plane on one side and has a grid of ribs (13) on the other. It has a web of flat tension strips (1) embedded in foam near to the flat side, the strips running both vertically and horizontally. They have bonding features which are not shown. A slot (10) runs round the periphery in the foam; this enables fixings to be inserted for mounting e.g. suitable tongues. The strips (1) distribute applied loads. Adjacent sheets are attached by locking bars (11) at selected points. ADVANTAGE - The product uses minimal material but has a high mechanical strength. It is readily combined mechanically with other construction or cladding materials. It can be used in large areas with thin walls. It is suitable for use as highly stressed packaging material.
