A hand holdable data entry unit (10) comprising a reading sensor (14, 90) for sensing commands and/or data and for producing input signals in response to said sensed commands and/or data, rewritable storage (78) programmable with information relating to selectable items, a controller (74) connected to receive and process said input signals from said sensor (14, 90), said controller (74) being arranged to respond to commands and/or sensed commands to control said data entry unit (10) and to said data to select a said item and a display screen (20) for displaying a user readable representation of said commands and said stored information for said selected item, and a telecommunications interface (52, 94, 116) for telephonic transmission of information relating to a selected item or items from said storage (78) to a telecommunications network (50) and for telephonic reception of information relating to said selectable items to said storage (78) from said telecommunications network (50), wherein said telecommunications interface (52, 94, 116) is a telecommunications line interface integral to said data entry unit (10) and directly connects said data entry unit (10) to said telecommunications network (50).
