The locking mechanism (85) is applicable to a vibrating tray type scale which requires a mechanism for stabilizing a base (20) of the scale during period when articles are being conveyed onto and off a tray (24) of the scale. An electromagnetic locking mechanism (85) has been conceived that provides advantages for a vibrating tray scale. These advantages are simple construction, low cost, self compensation and zero force requirement. With such a locking mechanism, the vibrating tray scale functions more accurately and rapidly. <IMAGE>
