An image forming apparatus permits improving the light intensity distribution in the main scanning direction including the nonuniform light intensity derived from an optical means such as a Selfoc lens array. The apparatus comprises a plurality of edge emitter type EL light emitting elements (11a-11g). In these light emitting elements (11a-11g), the thicknesses of the light emitting layers (12a-12g) are determined to correspond to the nonuniform intensity distribution of the light beams after transmission through a Selfoc lens array used in combination with the EL light emitter array (10). Specifically, an EL light emitting element (11a-11g) having a thick light emitting layer (12a-12g) is arranged in a position corresponding to the position of a Selfoc lens which causes the light beam transmitted therethrough to have a low intensity. In other words, an EL light emitting element (11a-11g) which emits a light beam having a high intensity is arranged in a position corresponding to the position of the particular Selfoc lens noted above such that a light beam having a high intensity is guided to a Selfoc lens causing the light beam transmitted therethrough to have a low intensity. Likewise, an EL light emitting element (11a-11g) having a thin light emitting layer (12a-12g) is arranged in a position corresponding to the position of a Selfoc lens which causes the light beam transmitted therethrough to have a high intensity. <IMAGE> |
