1,126,076. Furnace linings. MORGANITE CRUCIBLE Ltd. 28 March, 1967 [1 April, 1966], No. 14693/66. Heading F4B. A composite refractory lining for use in a blast furnace having a shell C comprises an inner layer of bricks B and an outer layer of bricks A wherein the outer layer A has a higher thermal conductivity than the inner layer B. The inner layer B is of conventional refractory material such as aluminosilicate based material whereas the higher conductivity outer layer A comprises natural graphite or silicon carbide with, e.g. clay or carbon as the bonding agent, kaolinite type clays being preferred. Other materials such as electrographite, self-bonded or ceramic-bonded silicon carbide may alternatively be employed. The outer layer of bricks A may be heterogeneous wherein every alternate brick A is of high thermal conductivity and the remainder of low conductivity. In another construction the layer of high thermal conductivity material may be sandwiched between an inner layer and a third layer both of low conductivity material. Cement and ramming material of high conductivity are used respectively to join the bricks of the inner and outer layers together and to fill in any voids such as at D. |
