Iron impurities are separated from a metal sulphate solution, particularly zinc sulphate-containing solutions having an Fe content of 20-35 g./l., by precipitation as a complexed basic sulphate in the presence of K+, Na+ and/or NH4+ ions, preferably in a concentration of 1/10 -/ba1/4 of the Fe present in g./l. The process of the invention may be used in a hydrometallurgic process for zinc production with high recovery of Zn, Cd, Cn, Pb and Ag; the ore is subjected to leaching with H2SO4 under such conditions of pH and temperature that a minor proportion only of the Fe is dissolved, the solution being subjected to an electrolysis for the recovery of the major proportion of the Zn after which the residue is subjected to an acid leaching with spent electrolyte and conc. H2SO4, neutralized, the Pb and Ag-containing residue removed and the pH brought to a maximum of 1.5 for the precipitation of complexed basic iron sulphate in the presence of K+, Na+ and/or NH4+ ions.
|
