A control computer positions a gear-wheel tooth gap (3) using sensor signals from an integrated sensing system (7) in a tool support with a sensor insert (8). The insert has a measurement ball (6) for two-edge sensing. Sensing system sensors (10,11) record radial and tangential deflections from null positions. A radial deflection indicates either that the ball is on a tooth crown (apex) or that it is in contact with both sides of a gap, resulting in insert retraction and rotation of a clamping table. A tangential deflection causes rotation of the clamping table to achieve the null position. ADVANTAGE - The method enables the number of clamping table movements, and hence the measurement times, to be reduced.
