[Also in Division C5] Carbon paper waxes are obtained from crude montan wax by (i) saponifying at 90-180‹ C. with 100-110% of the theoretical weight of alkali metal hydroxide required, as calculated from the saponification number of the crude wax, (ii) acidifying with H 2 SO 4 below 90‹ C. to liberate the wax acids, and (iii) re-saponifying 5-40% of the carboxyl groups with Group I or II metal hydroxides. Optionally the saponified fraction from (i) is extracted with gasolenes or acetone before (ii). Step (i) utilizes NaOH or KOH, and step (iii) NaOH, KOH, Zn(OH) 2 , Mg(OH) 2 , Ba(OH) 2 , Ca(OH) 2 or a mixture thereof, as a concentrated aqueous solution or fine solid added to the melt at 100-130‹ C. |
