Apparatus for detecting bulges in a continuous metal casting as the casting passes through an unsupported path following a cooling stage, comprises a pair of detectors 12 which engage the broader sides of the casting and a recorder 28 which measures the algebraic sum of the detector outputs. A bulge is stated to be indicative of the presence of unsolidifed molten metal in the casting and when the algebraic sum exceeds a predetermined value, the recorder can automatically actuate means to change the rate of cooling or the speed of travel of the casting. |
