In apparatus for the continuous casting of steel from a ladle 10 into a water cooled cylindrical mould 15 a nozzle extension 20 comprises a cylindrical refractory tube 21 of larger diameter than the bore of the ladle nozzle 12, a refractory tip 22 having an inwardly tapering concave section 23 and an outlet orifice 24 held in place by a collar 34, and a refractory disc 25 including a seating part 26 for the ladle nozzle 12. The tube 21 and disc 25 are surrounded by a metal casing 30, granular refractory material 37 being packed therebetween. Refractory sealing material 29 may be provided between the nozzle 12 and the seating 26 to prevent air entering. The nozzle extension 20 is supported by trunnions 46 on ring 32 in a yoke 45 of an attachment device 40 including a fulcrum mounting 43 about which the nozzle extension 20 can be raised and lowered on lever arm 41 by turnbuckle 44. In a second embodiment the inwardly tapering section 23 is convex. |
