In the continuous casting of a steel strand the strand 16 emerges from an inclined mould 10 having a solidified skin at a temperature of not more than 2500‹ F. and not less than 2000‹ F., passes into a supporting passageway 151-156 where it is bent and then straightened to emerge in a substantially horizontal direction and having a skin temperature not more than 2000‹ F. and not less than 1300‹ F., and then passes through a secondary cooling zone to complete solidification. The supporting passageway comprises straight sections 151, 152 and 156 and intermediate curved sections 153, 154 and 155. Each section is formed by top and bottom plates (17), (18), Fig. 3 (not shown), having internal cavities for the flow of a coolant and apertures (22), Fig. 2 (not shown), may be provided connecting the internal cavity to the supporting face of the plates to allow coolant to pass directly on to the surface of the strand to lubricate its passage through the passageway. Further cooled plates 24 may be provided on the sides of the passageway in the straight sections and angled rollers 25 may be provided at the sides of the curved sections. The secondary cooling zone comprises direct sprays or jets of water 43, driven rollers 42 and supporting idler rollers 40. A starter bar is used having an end (56), Fig. 4 (not shown), formed with a groove (60) into which is wound an asbestos sealing gasket and having an extension (62) which extends under the end of a pouring tube (69) to protect a copper mould liner (11) from erosion by the initial pouring jet. The mould 10 is water cooled and may have pipe (66) for introducing a lubricant to the face of the liner (11) and may be oscillated along its axis. The withdrawal and supporting rollers may be water cooled. |
