PURPOSE: To provide a failure diagnosing system for diagnosing failures in a computer network. CONSTITUTION: A model base inferring system for diagnosing failures in a computer network 20 is provided with an information base storing information on the network 20. The information contains the topology 14 of the network 20, a component library 18, a class hierarchy containing diagnostic know-how, and diagnostic episodes. A diagnostic engine 10 receives pointers for states. Each state contains a central role and the most versatile class for the central role. Based on the states, the engine 10 constructs an information base 12 of the diagnostic episodes by using the stored information. |
