An apparatus for cutting a lengthwise displaceable strand 5 of material e.g. textile yarn, comprises a cutter 26 co-operable with a rotatable anvil 30, the strand being in contact with the roller such that during each cutting operation the anvil body is rotated slightly. The cutter 26 is mounted in a support 24 which is actuated by a solenoid 14 via a lever 16. The anvil is formed of a material which is softer than the material from which the cutter is made e.g. the anvil material may be brass, unhardened steel or plastics. In modifications the anvil may be conical and the cutter edge inclined correspondingly or the cutter edge may bestraight and the axis of the conical anvil inclined. Alternatively the strand material may be fed across the end surface of the anvil and the cutter arranged to co-operate with the latter surface (Fig. 3, not shown).</p> |
